Program Description
The John D. Isaacs Undergraduate Research Assistant Program provides undergraduate students interested in marine science with high-quality summer research experiences while also assisting current California Sea Grant-supported investigators to further their marine research projects. Through this grants program, California Sea Grant seeks to provide talented undergraduate students with an opportunity to work closely with established marine scientists, develop their research skills, and better define their career goals in marine science.
The program is sponsored by California Sea Grant to honor the memory of John D. Isaacs, a monumental figure in marine research. An innovative leader in marine science, he served as a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and director of University of California’s Institute of Marine Resources, which once administered California Sea Grant.
The goals of this program are to: (1) encourage established marine investigators to integrate undergraduates into their research activities; and (2) stimulate students’ serious consideration of a career as a marine scientist.
The Isaacs Undergraduate Research Assistant grants will provide selected current California Sea Grant investigators $2,500 to award support to one undergraduate research assistant for the summer.
Each investigator awarded a grant is expected to identify an undergraduate student in good standing to be named the Isaacs Scholar and participate in the research assistantship (a student does not need to be identified at the time of application). As part of the learning and research experience of the student, the investigator is expected to provide appropriate instruction, integration and supervision for the Isaacs Scholar as a member of the research team/lab.
Eligibility
Currently supported California Sea Grant principal investigators.
Selection
Funding decisions will be made on the basis of the following criteria:
- The quality of the student's proposed research.
- The level of educational benefit to the undergraduate research assistant.
- The investigator’s previous experience working with undergraduates, particularly in research.
- The extent to which the research project addresses goals and objectives of the California Sea Grant Strategic Plan.

Timeline

Reporting
Both the California Sea Grant investigator (research advisor) and the Isaacs Scholar (undergraduate research assistant) are required to submit a report on their experiences. Investigator reports should include evaluation of the Isaacs Scholar’s work and whether and how the investigator’s research was advanced as a result of the grant support. The Isaacs Scholar reports should evaluate their experience and describe the ways in which they benefited from the summer research assistantships.
